Where P1500 fits into the finishing sequence

P1500 sits very high in the abrasive progression. The surface should already be flat, defect-free and refined before this stage. A typical finishing process may progress through increasingly fine grits until P1500 is used to reduce the remaining scratch pattern to an extremely fine level. Depending on the coating system and desired finish, the work may then continue to an even finer abrasive or to a polishing process.

P1500 sanding is about refinement, not removal

At this grit level, heavy pressure does not improve productivity. The goal is to allow the fine abrasive grains to work uniformly across the surface. Light pressure, good extraction and controlled machine movement are far more important than trying to increase the cutting rate.

Pro Tips

Use P1500 only after deeper scratches and defects have been completely removed with the appropriate preceding abrasive grades.
Avoid making a large jump from a coarse grit directly to P1500. The ultra-fine abrasive will take unnecessarily long to remove deep sanding marks.
Use light pressure and allow the abrasive and sander's orbit to do the work.
Keep the sanding pad flat against broad surfaces to produce a uniform scratch pattern.
Carefully align the disc with the MULTI-JETSTREAM 2 extraction pattern for maximum dust removal.
Use a suitable Festool dust extractor even during ultra-fine sanding. Fine particles can both contaminate the finish and become airborne.
Clean the workpiece thoroughly before moving to P1500 so no coarser particles from the preceding sanding stage remain on the surface.
Use a fresh, clean abrasive on critical finishing work. One trapped coarse particle can create scratches much deeper than the intended P1500 pattern.
Inspect clear coats using strong directional or inspection lighting. Fine scratches that are difficult to see under general lighting become much more obvious.
Do not continue using a disc that has become contaminated, damaged or heavily clogged.
