The Festool DOMINO D 8x40/780 BU is a bulk pack of 780 precision-manufactured beech DOMINO dowels for producing strong, accurately aligned joints in solid wood and panel materials. Unlike conventional round dowels, the distinctive elongated DOMINO cross-section provides a large gluing area and exceptional resistance to twisting. Festool's projecting guide ribs centre each dowel precisely in the routed mortise, while specially shaped glue pockets and longitudinal grooves distribute adhesive throughout the joint and allow excess glue to escape. This combination creates an extremely secure connection while making assembly fast and forgiving. The 8 x 40 mm size can be used with Festool DOMINO DF 500, DF 500 R, cordless DFC 500 and DOMINO XL DF 700 joining machines using the appropriate cutter and mortise settings. Manufactured from FSC™-certified beech, these dowels are intended primarily for interior furniture, cabinetmaking, joinery, shopfitting and exhibition construction.

Why one tight mortise and wider following mortises work so well

The first DOMINO mortise is normally used as the precise reference point and therefore determines exact alignment. Depending on the application, subsequent mortises can be cut slightly wider using the DOMINO machine's mortise-width settings. This gives the remaining dowels a small amount of lateral assembly tolerance while the first DOMINO keeps the components perfectly aligned. It is one of the reasons the system is both precise and fast in real-world furniture construction.

Pro Tips

Use the narrow mortise setting for the first reference DOMINO so the two components align precisely.
Where appropriate, use a wider mortise for subsequent DOMINOs to make larger assemblies easier to bring together.
Mark matching reference faces on both workpieces before routing to prevent accidentally cutting mortises from opposite reference surfaces.
Set the routing depth carefully. A 40 mm DOMINO typically requires the mortise depth to be divided appropriately between the two workpieces.
Always check that sufficient material remains behind each mortise, particularly when joining thinner panels or working close to an edge.
Apply enough glue to coat the mortise and DOMINO surfaces without completely filling the cavity with excess adhesive.

How to Use

Mark the required joint position and reference faces on both components.
Fit the appropriate 8 mm DOMINO cutter to the compatible DF 500, DF 500 R, DFC 500 or DF 700 machine.
Set the mortise depth to suit the 40 mm DOMINO and the thickness of the two workpieces.
Set the fence height and angle according to the joint geometry.
Secure the workpiece where necessary and position the DOMINO machine against the selected reference surface.
Cut the first mortise using the precise reference setting.
Cut the corresponding first mortise in the mating component from the same reference orientation.
Cut additional mortises, using a wider mortise setting where appropriate to provide useful assembly tolerance.
Remove excessive loose dust from the mortises before gluing.
Apply a suitable woodworking adhesive to the mortises and/or DOMINOs according to the adhesive manufacturer's recommendations.
Insert the 8 x 40 mm DOMINOs into one side of the joint.
