The Festool DOMINO D 6x40/1140 BU is a professional bulk pack of 1140 precision-manufactured beech DOMINO dowels for creating exceptionally strong and accurately aligned joints in solid wood and panel materials. Unlike conventional round dowels, the elongated DOMINO profile provides a much larger cross-section and is inherently resistant to rotation, immediately stabilising the components being joined. Laterally projecting guide ribs centre each DOMINO accurately inside the routed mortise, while specially formed glue pockets and longitudinal grooves distribute adhesive throughout the joint and allow excess glue to escape during assembly. The 6 x 40 mm size is designed specifically for the Festool DOMINO DF 500, DF 500 R and cordless DFC 500 joining machines using the appropriate 6 mm cutter. The first mortise controls alignment – wider mortises make assembly easier

One of the clever features of the DOMINO system is that not every mortise has to be equally tight. The first mortise is normally routed to the exact width and serves as the reference that aligns the workpieces. Depending on the application, following mortises can be routed wider to provide a small amount of lateral tolerance. The first DOMINO keeps the components accurately positioned while the wider mortises make larger assemblies much easier to put together.

Why choose 6 x 40 mm?

The 6 x 40 mm size provides greater joint capacity than smaller 4 mm and 5 mm DOMINOs while remaining within the compact DF 500 system. It is a particularly useful choice for furniture components, frames, cabinet parts and panel assemblies where the material thickness provides sufficient space for the 6 mm mortise and appropriate mortising depth.

Pro Tips

Use the narrow mortise setting for the first reference DOMINO so the mating components align precisely.
Where appropriate, use a wider mortise setting for subsequent DOMINOs to make larger assemblies easier to bring together.
Clearly mark matching reference faces before routing so both workpieces are machined from the same orientation.
Set mortising depth carefully. For a 40 mm DOMINO, divide the mortise depth appropriately between the two workpieces according to the joint design.
Always make sure sufficient material remains behind each mortise, especially when joining thinner panels or working close to an edge.
Dry-fit complex assemblies before applying glue to confirm that every component and mortise aligns correctly.
Apply enough glue to wet the joining surfaces but avoid unnecessarily flooding the mortise.
Place adhesive inside the mortise as well as on the DOMINO where appropriate; the grooves and pockets will help distribute it as the joint closes.
Keep unused beech DOMINOs dry and preferably in their original carton or a closed Systainer. Moisture can cause wooden dowels to swell.

How to Use

Mark the joint positions and reference faces on both components.
Fit the appropriate 6 mm DOMINO cutter to the compatible DF 500, DF 500 R or DFC 500 joining machine.
Set the mortising depth to suit the 40 mm DOMINO and the thickness of the workpieces.
Set the machine fence height and angle according to the joint configuration.
Secure the workpiece where necessary.
Position the DOMINO machine against the selected reference surface.
Route the first mortise using the precise narrow setting.
Route the corresponding first mortise in the mating component from the same reference orientation.
Route additional mortises, using a wider mortise setting where appropriate to provide assembly tolerance.
Remove excessive loose dust from the mortises before gluing.
Apply a suitable woodworking adhesive to the mortises and/or DOMINOs according to the adhesive manufacturer's recommendations.
Insert the 6 x 40 mm DOMINOs into one side of the joint.
Bring the mating component into position and press the joint together evenly.
Check that reference surfaces, edges and faces are correctly aligned.
Clamp the assembly and remove excess adhesive before it cures.
Allow the adhesive to cure fully before loading or machining the joint further.
